If You Have Oily Skin, Read This!

Are you stressed each night about the amount of oil on your skin, the blackheads and whiteheads that won’t disappear with daily care, and the excessive sebum that suffocates your pores? If that’s the case, you have oily skin. Too much oil can cause makeup to crumble easily, and excessive sebum can increase your chances of skin issues. If you have this skin type, you should pay special attention to sebum and pore care. But, because not all oily skin has the same characteristics, the very first step you need to take is to identify the exact condition of your skin. Since your skin’s condition can change depending on the balance of oil and water, it’s especially important for you to understand your skin’s moisture balance. Seemingly similar oily skin can be moisture-deficient or sensitive depending on how oily or moisturized it is.

Once you understand your skin’s condition, the first thing you should focus on is cleansing. Why? Because it’s the foundation of skincare! Oily skin that secretes a lot of sebum needs a deep cleanse to reach each and every pore. Cleansers that contain sebum-absorbing and sebum-controlling ingredients, such as myristic acid, stearic acid, lauric acid, and palmitic acid, are good for oily skin. If your skin secretes excessive oil and sebum, washing your face 2-3 times a day is okay, but be careful, because more than that can take away not only oil but moisture as well. Also, using a powerful cleanser to remove excessive oil and sebum can actually be harmful to your skin. It’s best to avoid rough scrubbers with large particles or strong acidic or alkaline-based cleansing products.

Rather than strongly absorbing blackheads and whiteheads, we recommend melting them away with AHA, BHA, or oil. If you use a massage technique to melt them away, don’t exceed 10 minutes because excessive irritation can harm your skin. If you use oil, use a soft facial wash to remove any remaining oil off your skin. This is because for oily skin, oils can produce sebum and clog your pores. If your skin is irritated, make sure your base skincare is hypoallergenic to avoid further irritation.

If you use a deep cleansing wash, use your base care to balance your moisture and control your oil and sebum. If you have extremely oily skin due to lack of moisture, try using a highly moisturizing toner and finish with a product that prevents moisture from escaping. For oily skin, using oil may not be the best choice, but if you need to moisturize your face, we recommend using products that contain very little oil or oil-like products. Because deep-cleansing controls sebum, it’s important to avoid products that absorbs sebum in the first stage of your skincare routine. You might be tempted to completely get rid of sebum, but because of the skin’s balancing characteristic, excessive sebum removal can actually lead to more sebum production.
